Are you blogging?

If you are looking for an internship, you should be blogging about the industry you want to be in. You don’t need 5,000, 500 or even 50 followers reading your blog, you just need to be getting your thoughts out there. When a hiring manager or future supervisor out there Googles you, don’t you want credible information to pop up and not your Facebook photos?

Keeping and maintaining a blog shows intelligence, dedication and motivation. Having an active blog shows that you are passionate about your industry, while also showing that you are interested enough in a certain area that you are constantly in the know.

With a blog you also show that you are a good writer with an opinion. Writing and sharing ideas insightfully shows your interests, just make sure you write about what you know. When someone searches for you online, they are then welcomed to a plethora of information about who you are and what you are about.

So I ask: Are you blogging? Do you want to blog? Not sure how? Any questions about blogging?

No matter what your answers were for the above questions, hit up #BlogChat on Twitter ever Sunday night from 8-9PM Central Time. #BlogChat was started by @MackCollier to discuss blogging and the best practices for blogging. This chat has over 900 weekly contributors who are more than welcome to answer any question about blogging that someone could ask.

When you think about it, searching for an internship is about the same as searching for a job. From interview follow-up etiquette to what make a proper cover letter, #JobHuntChat is my number one source for job search and internship advice. #JobHuntChat is moderated by Rich DeMatteo (@CornOnTheJob), Jessica Miller-Merrill (@Blogging4Jobs), and Nicole Crimaldi (@MsCareerGirl).

What I love about this chat is how it’s always being updated. According to WTHashtag.com, #JobHuntChat averages 91 posts a day. This means that daily you have access to a diverse group of Twitter folk made up of job seekers, resume writers, recruiters, career experts and coaches, HR professionals, bloggers, college students, and their valuable opinions and insight. I do not go a day without searching the #JobHuntChat hashtag and seeing what I find. Plus, you get to submit your own questions and get professional advice! You can e-mail JobHuntChat@gmail.com as well as DM or send a tweet to @JobHuntChat. Let me remind you that this is free advice! Instead to going to a internship coach or job search coach, you have hundreds available at your fingertips!

I highly suggest that every Monday at 10PM EST you are signed in to Twitter, following one of the moderators, and are ready to learn incredibly valuable job search and internship search information. See you there!

Once I started becoming very active on Twitter, I discovered them and I was quickly blown away with the quality of content and contacts I was stumbling upon while using this tool.

If Twitter is about connections, then tweet chats are the conferences. Every time I participate in a twitter chat I meet new people, and I always end up learning something new. If you are new to twitter chats or Twitter, here are some quick pointers on making tweet chats work for you.

What it is: A Twitter tweet chat is a pre-arranged chat that happens on Twitter through the use of tweets (Twitter updates). A tweet chat always has a predefined hashtag (#) to link all of the related tweets together in a virtual conversation. Twitter chats usually include a predetermined agenda moderated by a leader or speaker.

How to use it: When I want to participate in or even just follow a Twitter chat I use TweetChat.com. Here, the chat updates in real-time at the speed you choose. This allows you to see a constant flow of new tweets without having to keep refreshing the page or leaving the website. To discover new Twitter chats, I used What the Hashtag?!, the self-proclaimed “user-editable encyclopedia for hashtags found on Twitter.” On What The Hashtag?! you can also can find the chat’s top contributors, chat history, stats, and an RSS feed to follow the chat.

#Internchat: The ultimate Twitter chat for students and interns has to be #InternChat, which is hosted by Lauren Berger, @InternQueen, and Heather Huhman, @HeatherHuhman. Lauren Berger is the CEO of Intern Queen Inc., an online internship destination that helps students find and apply for internships while also educating them on how to make the most of their experiences. Heather R. Huhman is the founder and president of Come Recommended, an online community about helping students and recent college graduates pursue their dream careers.

#InternChat is a platform for internship-seeking students and intern-seeking employers to directly connect. The purpose of #InternChat is to ask and answer any questions about internships. Topics on #InternChat can include anything internship-related, from acing the application process to creating a standout resume to what to wear in an internship. #InternChat is every other Tuesday at 7PM EST/4PM PST. Get involved with #InternChat on Twitter by hashtagging everything internship-related with #InternChat.
